Acne Light Therapy

How to cure acne with a light therapy treatment?

Are you tired of using the same products over and over again without results? You can try this untraditional way of removing acne and it’s one of the most effective ways without getting into hard medications like Accutane or other products that have important side effects. Some of those medications are also extremmely expensive! But watch out, acne light therapy can be great but in some cases side effects have been detected so you need to be careful when it comes to choose the best option.

The most known acne light therapy is Blue-light. This type of light therapy kills the acne causing bacteria and it’s widely used to treat inflammatory acne vulgaris that has not responded to regular treatments. Blue light therapy does not contain Ultraviolet (UV) light. UV Light can actually damage your skin and it is not longer used to treat acne.

Patients receive this type of therapy in sessions in which they get dosis that are incremented little by little. In most cases you get 8 sessions in a 4 week period, and each one of them lasts aproximately 15 minutes. Now of course there are side effetcs like temorary pigment change, swelling on some treated areas of the skin and some patients have experimented dryness. In most cases, people see results of more than 50% of clearance. One exeption to this is nodulocystic acne lessions, which usually tend to worsen when is treated with blue light, but in general blue light therapy is good for inflammatory acne lesions.

Another acne light therapy treamtment is called “Pulsed Light and Heat Energy Treatment” (LHE). It basically combines pulses of light and heat, which attacks the main causes of acne: bacteria and over produced sebum, the oily substance generated by sebaceous glands. It is recommended to treat only mild to moderate acne. Studies have shown that to get good results you need at least 2 months of treatment, and 2 sessions per week.

ALA + Acne Light Therapy is another option. ALA stands for Aminolevulinic Acid and it’s a solution that is applied in the skin to be treated before applying the light. ALA basically increases sensitivity to light and it is applied for about 15-60 minutes. After treating the skin with ALA, the doctor proceeds to apply light on the skin. Since this is a method that makes the skin so sensitive, people are advised to use sun protection after 48 hs after treatment. It’s also very important to note that ALA is effective, but may produce some undesirable side effects like temporary darkness of the skin and developement of folliculitis which is an inframmation of hair folicles and the bad things is that it resembles acne.

So, what do we think about these acne light therapies?

While the studies are very promising, the use of these therapies is still in the early stages and it may not be the first choice for treating acne. And in addition to this take into account that most insurance plans classify this type of acne light therapy as “emerging technologies” and they don’t cover the treatment.
